WWTP Gevgelija, Macedonia

The environment, especially water resources and the biodiversity richness of North Macedonia, presents one of the major values and potentials for the future development of the country. The protection and conservation of environmental features, the establishment of adequate infrastructure, the provision of quality public services, and a sustainable use of natural resources are all crucial for saving North Macedonia’s fragile environment and improving living conditions.

The objectives of the construction of the wastewater treatment plant in Gevgelija are: improvement of the water quality in the river Vardar, safe irrigation downstream, fostering trans-boundary cooperation with Greece, assistance for North Macedonian government to fulfill the requirements of the EU water related directives and international regulation.

Scope

The project comprised the design and construction of the WWTP Gevgelija water line with a treatment capacity of 30,000 Population Equivalents (PE), based on an activated sludge process. The completed works included the inlet and outlet structures, screening plant, aerated grit chamber, biological reactors (aeration tanks), and secondary settling tanks, as well as the supply and installation of process control and measurement equipment. The project also included the implementation of a SCADA system enabling integrated monitoring, control, and efficient operation of the overall treatment plant.
